The 3 day all inclusive plein air retreat includes:  

Demos, workshops and painting guidance available on-demand 

with resident plein air artist Allen Kriegshauser.  

Plus plenty of great comfort food and housing all included!
 

Roll out of bed into an incredible scenic location and take in the  sunrises.  Enjoy painting and refining your plein air skills during the day.  In the evenings sit, paint, read and enjoy the breathtaking un-obstructed views of the upper Mississippi River Valley from the lodge’s ample wrap-around covered deck.

A UNIQUE PAINTING EXPERIENCE.

THE LOCATION:

River Wind Farm is a working alpaca farm located high above the upper Mississippi with views that are hard to describe.  The River Wind lodge is nestled on the crest of a high bluff above Hamburg, IL.  Enjoy breathtaking un-obstructed views of the upper Mississippi River and the valley which stretches for miles in each direction from the lodge’s ample wrap-around covered deck.  For the next several days experience spectacular sunsets, colorful misty sunrises, and flocks of migrating birds while the alpacas graze on the pastures below.  


The farm is located 70 north of St. Louis OR 49 Miles north of Alton, IL.  Take the Great River Road north thru Grafton past Pere Marquette State Park. (This is a non-smoking facility.)

    INSTRUCTOR: ALLEN KRIEGSHAUSER, a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute in painting and printmaking.  I have been painting for over 50 years and was recently a featured artist in “Arts in America, on PBS”.  I actively compete in plein air competition across the US (22 events 2015-17 including an invited artist at:  Door County, Plein Air Texas, Easels in Frederick & Plein Air Richmond, Solomons Island).

    WORKSHOP STATEMENT:  This workshop aims to offer straight forward actionable information, indispensable how-to instruction necessary to create a solid plein air painting.  50 years painting experience will be shared including the do’s as well as the what not to do's.  This workshop will provide an arsenal of practical technical advice so that you will have a quiver of skills essential for delivering a confident structured painting while removing the paralyzing frustration of what to do next with your painting.


    Workshop will cover:

    ·   How to compose and simplify a large landscape scene.

    ·   Different painting surfaces (pro and cons)

    ·   Brushes (which one and when along with other helpful tools of the trade)

    ·   Mediums (different types, how much is too much)

    ·    How to choose a subject or location

    ·    Composing and designing (Nail down your painting so you aren’t chasing the changing light)

    · Emphasis on values and mixing colors

    ·  How-to-deliver clean colors to the your canvas without creating mud                              (wet-on-wet color application & layering color)

    ·    and much more . . . want to know about the business of painting ask away.



    What to bring, accomodations, meals

    What to bring:

    Yourself, clothes, painting supplies and an appetite.



    Painting supplies:

     (Will send a detailed supply list with the reservation confirmation email.  

    List will include detailed paint, brush, razor palette scraper and palette knife list.)


    An easel appropriate for landscape painting (Soltek, French,  tripod with box, etc)

    • Painting palette (plexiglass preferred)
    • Thinner pail 
    • Paint thinner (odorless mineral spirits)
    • Plein air umbrella
    • Sunscreen, bug spray and hat

    I will bring an ample supply of painting panels.  I also have extra easels, palettes & thinner pails which are available for use at the retreat on a first come basis.  Contact me before the workshop if you need any of the above.

    Lunch noon-1pm:  buffet lunch

    Paint out with the instructor or paint on your own.

    Hors d'oeuvres/Dinner: 6-7pm

    Painting critiques/read/sit on the deck or by the wood burning stove


    Sunday:  

    Breakfast: 7-8:30 am

    Structured workshop 8:30-noon

    Lunch noon-1pm:  buffet lunch

    Paint out with the instructor or paint on your own.
